The Department of Maxillofacial Surgery at the University Hospital of Strasbourg is located in the oldest part of a town with 410,000 inhabitants. It serves the entire population of the Alsatian region in east France (1.7 million imhabitants), and is the only referral center providing 24-hour maxillofacial trauma service in this geographic area.

The department is involved in all aspects of maxillofacial surgery, and particularly in:

  • maxillofacial traumatology, including surgical treatment of condylar fractures of the mandible
  • secondary correction of post-traumatic deformities
  • treatment of facial and craniofacial malformations
  • orthognathic surgery and distraction osteogenesis
  • tumor surgery (bone and soft tissues)
  • reconstructive surgery of the face and of the facial skeleton, including microsurgery
  • burn injuries to the face
  • plastic surgery of the face, including esthetic surgery
  • dental rehabilitation, including dental implants and pre-implant surgery

A total of 25 beds are shared with the Department of General Esthetic, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Profitable exchanges between these two specialties are ongoing.

Close collaboration also exists with the University of Strasbourg Dental School, the Pediatric Surgery Department, the Dermatology Department of the University Hospital of Strasbourg, and with the Institute of Anatomy, Medical Faculty, University of Strasbourg.

In the field of research, a wide range of programs are in progress. These cover clinical research (biomaterial and surgical technique evaluations), maxillofacial biomechanics (mechanical bone properties, osteosynthesis technique evaluation), facial morphology, and robotics applied to orthognathic surgery.

Short-term residential visits (from 1 day to 1 month) are possible (at the visitor's expense). Clinical training and longer stays (residencies and scientific fellowships) are also available, but are subject to official authorization by the Medical Faculty and the University Hospital of Strasbourg.
Fellows should be qualified in maxillofacial surgery or oral surgery. At least one year of training in general surgery is desirable. The candidate's clinical or research interests should match the activities and priorities of the department.

Applications (and all necessary documents for residential fellows) should be sent to the Head of the Department. Because of the length of the administrative process, candidates should submit their applications 12 months before the start of their fellowship program.
