The Department for Cranio-Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery of the Medical University of Innsbruck offers the full range of services related to the medical specialty of maxillofacial surgery. The department’s ward contains 31 beds for adult patients and 7 beds for children. An interdisciplinary unit offers the possibility for intensive care. Two operating rooms with general anesthesia are available for use daily, with a third available occasionally members. Additionally, there are two units for surgical interventions requiring local anesthesia. The team consists of the head of the department (Prof. Dr. Dr. M. Rasse), twelve faculty members, and eight residents. Our areas of surgical and clinical expertise are:

Traumatology:
Due to the wide range of sporting facilities in Tyrol, traumatology is a major focus of our daily clinical and surgical work. Over the past 12 years nearly 13,000 facial trauma patients were recorded and documented by our department. Besides routine treatment of cranio-maxillofacial fractures, we specialize in the surgical treatment of condylar fractures and functional surgery of the TMJ.

Orthognathic surgery:
Each year the department handles approximately 200 orthognathic cases.

Tumor surgery:
Tumor surgery includes cases with the involvement of the head, neck, and skull base. Ablative surgery, primary and secondary reconstruction, and operative rehabilitation are performed. We offer microsurgical reconstruction of soft tissue, bone, and nerves.

Surgery of craniofacial malformations, including cleft-lip and palate surgery:
We treat patients with syndromal and non-syndromal craniosynostoses [craniostenoses?], as well as patients with cleft-lip and palate. Pre- and postsurgically, our medical treatment is interdisciplinary, involving ENT, logopedics, genetics, and orthodontics.

Short (1-3 months) and long-term (up to one year) residential visits are possible. A visit in our department is most suited to clinical and theoretical training in cranio- maxillofacial traumatology, osteosynthesis techniques, and the reconstruction and rehabilitation of congenital, traumatic, or tumor-associated malformations. Long-term visitors are invited to join ongoing clinical and experimental research projects in the fields of traumatology and bone regeneration.

Due to local legal requirements, it is currently possible for visiting doctors to participate in operations, but not to perform operations on their own. Any change in this status will be announced here.

Foreign candidates need documentation of employment at their present facility and of their current insurance status. In order to allow time to complete administrative processing we recommend that candidates submit their documents for the fellowship at least 6 months before starting the program.
