Hand Center
Foundation Trust

University Hospital Birmingham (UHB) NHS Foundation Trust runs the Queen Elizabeth and Selly Oak Hospitals in South Birmingham. With more than 6,900 staff, UHB is the leading teaching hospital in the West Midlands. The Trust provides the full range of hospital services and treats 500,000 patients each year.

In June 2006 UHB got the go ahead to build Birminghams first new acute hospital in 70 years. The first phase of the new hospital will be open in 2010. It will be fully operational by June 2012.

It is one of the highest performing and most successful trusts in the NHS and has been given the maximum three stars for the past four consecutive years.

We have 6700 employees, whose vast expertise deliver high quality care to more than half a million patients every year. Patient treatments range from a single outpatient appointment to a heart transplant.

Services
The Trust provides a whole range of services including secondary services for its local population and regional and national services for the people of the West Midlands and beyond. The Trust has the largest renal kidney programme in the UK, is a major specialist centre for burns and plastic surgery, hand surgery, neuroscience and specialist cancer centre.

The Trust also hosts the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine, which provides medical support to military operational deployments. It also provides secondary and specialist care for members of the armed forces.

The Birmingham Hand Centre based at this Trust has 9 Consultant Hand Surgeons from Orthopaedic and Plastic surgery root specialities. We provide a comprehensive hand surgery service inclusive of Brachial Plexus Surgery, Complex microsurgical reconstructions and complex Wrist reconstructions for trauma and diseases.

Education
We are the leading teaching hospital in the West Midlands and have strong teaching and research links with Birmingham University, the University of Central England and other academic institutions. The Queen Elizabeth Hospital is sited adjacent to the University of Birmingham campus directly linked to the Medical School buildings. The geographical proximity of the Trust and the Medical School and the multidisciplinary environment that exists in both, reinforce working arrangements and provide the background for continuing strength.

Foundation Status
We are in the first wave of NHS Foundation Trusts, and are in the process of building Birminghams first new general hospital for 70 years. The New Hospital Project is the second largest hospital building project in the country, and when the new hospital opens in 2010/12 our staff and the people of Birmingham will have access to one of the most modern healthcare facilities in Europe. The new hospital will see an improvement in quality of healthcare delivery resulting from the benefits of single site working and from the use of modern, attractive, purpose-built facilities which, in turn, would secure the Trusts position as the major provider of secondary and tertiary services within the West Midlands.

Workforce
UHB is one of Birminghams largest employers in Birmingham and it is committed to improving the working lives of all its staff. The new hospital will create 2,000 construction jobs and additional healthcare jobs. It is vital that we have a well motivated workforce, reflective of the communities we serve, recruit the new staff we need and provide appropriate, sensitive patient care.
