A close collaboration with the Department of Hand Surgery (PD Dr. E. Vögelin) facilitates the treatment of complex injuries and diseases requiring reconstructive procedures including nerve reconstructions and limb replantations.

The Department of Orthopedic Surgery is an internationally renowned institution, especially in the fields of spine surgery, pelvis and hip surgery, and complex trauma surgery. Several surgical procedures such as the periacetabular osteotomy for the treatment of hip dysplasia and the surgical dislocation of the hip for the treatment of femoroacetabular impingement and acetabular fractures have been developed at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery.

The Department of Orthopedic Surgery has a close and longstanding collaboration with the Group for Bone Biology and Orthopedic Research, Department of Clinical Research, University of Bern (Prof. W. Hofstetter) and the Institute for Surgical Technology and Biomechanics, University of Bern (Prof. L. Nolte). Together with these two institutions, research projects focusing on the healing of critical size bone defects, bone substitute materials, spinal biomechanics, and computer-aided surgery have been established.

For short-term fellowships (Program B, duration of 4 weeks) we can offer clinical training in the fields of pelvis and hip surgery as well as orthopedic trauma surgery including reconstructive procedures performed by the Department of Handsurgery. Applicants seeking a more extensive clinical training should apply for a clinical and scientific residential stay with 3 months duration (Program C). During their stay fellows will be fully integrated into one of the subspecialty teams of their choice. Applicants with a special interest in hand- and microsurgery will also be able to do a clinical rotation at the Department of Handsurgery (Dr. E. Vögelin). Furthermore, we do encourage fellows to actively participate in ongoing research projects, some of which are being conducted in collaboration with Prof. W. Hofstetter and Prof. L. Nolte, respectively.

Foreign candidates will need an official work permit. The University of Bern will arrange the issuing of the work permit. Due to the time needed for the administrative process, candidates should submit their application 12 months prior to the planned start of their fellowship.
