Welcome to the Hospital for Special Surgery Foot & Ankle!  We make every attempt to make the training in Foot & Ankle surgery the best it can be.

HSS Foot & Ankle has 13 surgeons, making us the largest orthopedic Foot & Ankle service in the country. Our goal is to provide trainees with a broad, multifaceted experience in the office, the operating room, the classroom/lecture hall, and the research laboratory. The reputation of our service at HSS has a longstanding history and is built upon the quality outcomes of our clinical service and the caliber of our research, innovation, and education programs. Our reputation enables us to attract top talent, further enhancing our leadership position in the future alignment across the service continues to be critical to our continued success.

We are very proud of the training and education of our residents and fellows, and we have created several opportunities  for them to be actively involved in clinical care, academics, transitional research, and quality improvement. In addition, fellows have teaching opportunities of orthopedic residents and medical students, through weekly conferences and clinics, including Foot & Ankle clinic and clinic surgery, operating room, Psychomotor Skills Education Laboratory sessions (BSEL) morning rounds and weekly HSS resident education lectures on Foot & Ankle topics.

Through these opportunities, our trainees develop precise technical skills to become a safe, efficient, and effective surgeon, enhance intra-operative judgments required to achieve positive outcomes, avoid complications, coordinate appropriate coverage of OR cases with rotating residents and physician assistants, embrace surgical alternatives, when necessary, promote safe and effective post-op care andfoster a multidisciplinary approach with cooperation of consultants, where appropriate.

The Foot and Ankle service is extremely active, with multiple opportunities for surgical experience.  Trainees have chances to participate in operative and non-operative aspects of all adult foot and ankle care.  Our fellows are in the operating room full-time at least three days per week, and they also devote time to the HSS Foot and Ankle Clinic. In addition, regularly scheduled sessions in the Bioskills Laboratory will give trainees additional opportunities for hands-on training.

Trainees also can develop and strengthen leadership and teaching skills through talks, presentations at journal clubs and M&M conferences, and completing the Foot and Ankle Core Curriculum in addition to satisfying ACGME requirements.
