Rambam Health Care Campus is a level 1 trauma center, concentrating the North third of Israel, and is a tertiary referral center for 12 other hospitals in that region. The trauma affiliation of the institute has a long lasting tradition of clinical activity, research and education. This is manifested with multidisciplinary approach and cooperation between various units, including trauma team, general surgery, ICU, plastic, cardio-thoracic, neurosurgery, maxilla-facial, urology and of course orthopedic surgery.

In 2022, 3910 patients were admitted due to acute trauma, with 3662 trauma surgeries performed on, of which almost half were orthopedic trauma surgeries. The orthopedic division comprises all sub-specialties including trauma, spine, hand & microsurgery, foot & ankle, shoulder & elbow, pediatrics, deformity correction, adult reconstruction, onco-orthopedics, sports and arthroscopy. Since poly-trauma is a common situation, each unit is affiliated to the orthopedic trauma service and contributes to the care of the injured patient as needed. The division puts an emphasis on implementing the most up to date technologies, e.g. navigation, patient specific instrumentation, 3D modeling & printing, frames, internal lengthening nails, etc. for challenging cases.

Trainees and fellows are exposed to complex trauma patients as a daily routine, in the emergency department, the operation theatre and the follow up in the outpatient clinics, with long term prognosis and complications. All consultants engaged with trauma surgery are graduates of fellowship programs overseas, and appointed as instructors of the AO foundation (in various levels).

The Orthopedic division in Rambam Health Care Campus is very academic, and affiliated to the Rappaport Faculty of Medicine in the Technion Institute of Technology. The unit trains approximately 20 registrars of orthopedic surgery, numerous registrar of hand surgery and many visiting trainees from other hospitals. The majority of the consultants in our unit engages medical education and research on a regular basis, and holds academic appointments and publications. The unit is also an official education site of Biodesign Israel, which is one of the three worldwide Stanford Biodesign program sites, which educates and promotes the field of medtech innovation.
